According to officials at the Awqaf ministry, there is high demand for these courses and many parents wish their children to learn the Quran in Maktabs during the summer school holidays.
Every year in summer, parents rush to Maktabs to register their children for Quran classes.
Maktabs have a long history in the North African country and in addition to Quran teaching, they traditionally offer lessons on religious sciences as well as the Arabic language and literature.
In addition to Maktabs, there are Quran teaching centers known as Maseed that offer Quranic courses in summer.
The Maktabs and Maseeds in Morocco served as fortresses to protect the country’s Islamic and Arab identity during the colonial period.
That is why the ruler of Morocco, King Mohammed VI, has ordered the establishment of a special prize to preserve and boost the status of these centers in the Moroccan society.
